20 Jan 2009

2008 Annual Interpretive Summary

The great majority of the production systems used in the cerrado of Brazil are based on sequential cultivation of one crop, with very little crop rotation. This situation has led to serious problems of diseases, soil degradation, and with time, declining yields. It is believed that a long-term research project looking into various aspects of sustainable agricultural systems will be instrumental to farms located in many areas of the Brazilian cerrado. The project gives emphasis to crop rotation and other alternatives to lead farmers to long-term profit. Part of this project is dedicated to the study of soil fertility management in sustainable agriculture in the region. IPNI is providing intellectual and financial support to this project with the goal of improving the long-term outlook for Brazilian agriculture. The project started in 2008 and initial results should be available in 2009. Brazil-53
