Management for Maximum Economic Yield of Open Pollinated and Hybrid Canola

This research was initiated to determine whether higher yielding hybrid rapeseed (canola) varieties require a higher level of management to express higher yields, compared to older open pollinated canola varieities.

Objectives

To evaluate the effect of seeding rate, fertilizer addition and fungicides on the optimum yield potential of hybrid and open pollinated canola in the Thick Black, Thin Black and Dark Brown soil zones.

In 2000 a second N rate study was initiated at all locations to provide a broader range of N application rates with the following objective: to determine if more N is required to maximize yield of hybrid than OP cultivars because of the higher yield potential of hybrids.
