Chloride's Role in Maximizing Wheat Variety Performance

To understand the interactions of major wheat varieties with chloride fertilization, and evaluate effects of chloride fertilization on wheat plant pathology, plant maturity and thousand kernel weight. Also to increase awareness of dealers and growers of the affects of appropriate chloride fertilization on wheat yield and profitability.

Project Description

Different varieties of wheat respond differently to Cl fertilization. However, the Cl responsiveness of many specific varieties is unknown. This project, is part of a regional Cl trial that includes sites in Texas, Kansas, the Dakota’s and Manitoba. The project is evaluating the Cl response of 15 varieties of spring wheat. First results have confirmed that response is highly variable among varieties and on different soil types. At one location, 5 of the 15 varieties responded to Cl fertilization with yield increases ranging from 5 to 15 bushels per acre. Identifying responsive wheat varieties is an important step in knowing where Cl fertilization can have the largest impact on crop production.
