Soil Nutrient Stratification in Long-term Sustainable Cropping Systems Research Study

A tillage by rotation study evaluated after 11 years to determine if the use of no-till had led to nutrient stratification in the plots. The results of this study indicate that nutrients did become stratified, but the effect was minor.

Justification

There are several long-term research plots located across Alberta in different agro-climatic zones. The Three Hills study was initiated in the spring of 1991 and is located in the Dark Brown-Black transition soil zone. This study compliments the other long-term sites in the Sustainable Cropping Systems Research Site Network. The site provides an important central Alberta location to evaluate crop diversity and tillage systems in this crop production environment.
