1997 Annual Interpretive Summary

Research on soil erosion and balanced fertilization in Sichuan province, 1997

Compared to a complete treatment of balanced N, P and K, trials in Ziyang county found 15 percent and 16 percent reductions in wheat yield when fertilizer P and K were respectively excluded from the treatments. The use of 15 t/ha of chicken manure in combination with N, P and K increased yield over chicken manure alone by 4.6 percent. Similarly, in Shiling county, exclusion of fertilizer P and K reduced yield by 75 percent and 11 percent, respectively. Also, manure applied with N, P and K increased yields by 32.5 percent compared to application of manure alone. The proper combination of organic and inorganic sources will produce the necessary crop residues that are essential for reducing soil erosion. SICHUAN-12
