1996 Annual Interpretive Summary

Studies on the exhaustion of sulfur in paddy soils with consecutive rice cropping under field conditions, 1996

Sulfur balances calculated from continuous rice field trials conducted in Guangdong province point towards a 6 kg S/ha/crop deficit if S fertilizers are not applied. Field plots with soil S levels below 25 ppm had rice yield responses equal to 16.8 kg grain for each kg of S applied. Rice yields were increased by 320 to 530 kg/ha with the addition of 20 to 30 kg S/ha, which was 5.9 to 9.7 percent higher than soils with no S applied. Continual exhaustion of soil S supplies will only accentuate this difference. GUANGDONG-06
