2010 Annual Interpretive Summary
Research and Demonstrations on the Effect of Fertilization on Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 2010
At present, the area planted to Chinese medicine herbs in Bozhou County of Anhui Province has reached 70,000 ha, about 10% of the national total. Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (RAM) is one of the main herbs in Bozhou, with a production area of 40,000 ha. This research project has aimed to improve RAM yield and quality since 2008 by improving nutrient management practices and soil fertility for its local farmers.
In 2010, results from three field trials and demonstration plots indicated that the best fertilizer application treatment was 150-120-225 kg N-P2O5-K2O plus 15 kg ZnSO4/ha and 12 kg Borax/ha. This treatment produced larger harvestable roots that contributed to a higher fresh yield of 10.3 t/ha (+10%) and an economic benefit of USD 18,787/ha (+16%) compared to common practice.
Based on these field trials and demonstrations, some field inspection activities for leaders and technicians, harvest field days, and training courses for farmers were organized. Related publications were also delivered by the Anhui Agricultural University. Anhui-17
