Dr. Fixen is IPNI Senior Vice President and is located in Brookings, South Dakota. He coordinates Institute programs in the Americas and Oceania and directs the Institute’s research efforts. Currently, IPNI supports over 160 research projects at universities and agencies in many countries around the world. Dr. Fixen grew up in southwestern Minnesota on a crop and livestock farm and served in faculty positions at the University of Wisconsin and South Dakota State University prior to joining the Institute. His technical focus has been in the area of nutrient management and how soil fertility and fertilizer use fit into the overall scheme of crop production systems and the environment. Throughout his career he has authored nearly 300 articles related to nutrient management including several book chapters and developed and taught popular courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Dr. Fixen is a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy, the Soil Science Society of America, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Fluid Fertilizer Foundation. He has served as Chair of Div. S-8, as Associate Editor of the Soil Science Society of America Journal, and as President of the North Central Branch of ASA. He has served on numerous boards, academic and agency review panels, and industry committees. Examples include the Planning Committee for the 18th World Congress of Soil Science and, for several years, the Science Advisory Committee of the International Nitrogen Initiative. Dr. Fixen has also served on Minnesota and South Dakota Certified Crop Adviser Boards and was the first President of the South Dakota Board. He has served on the Soil and Plant Analysis Council Board of Directors and on the Editorial Board of the Precision Agriculture Journal. He is currently a member of the Agronomic Science Foundation Board of Directors and serves on the Soil Science Society of America Science Policy Committee.
