Interpretive Summary

This long-term experiment was initiated in 2009 at the Dahe Experimental Station, Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, where summer maize followed by winter wheat is the main cropping system. The experiment had two main plots of ecological intensification (EI) and farmers’ practices (FP), and three subplots of nitrogen (N) application: N applied in all years (N all yr); N applied in two out of three years (N 2/3 yr): and no N applied in any years (N 0 yr).

The long-term field experiment of the Global Maize Project was initiated in 2009 in Dahe station, Shijiazhuang city, Hebei Province. Summer maize and winter wheat rotation is the dominant cropping system in Hebei. Winter wheat (the 14th successive crop) was planted in October 2015 and was harvested in June 2016. Summer maize (the 15th successive crop) was planted in June 2016 and harvested in September 2016.

This long-term Global Maize ecological intensification (EI) experiment was initiated in 2009 in Dahe Station, Shijiazhuang city, Hebei Province. The main cropping system in Hebei is summer maize rotated with winter wheat. Winter wheat (the 12th successive crop) was planted on October 2014 and was harvested on June 12, 2015. Summer maize (the 13th successive crop) was planted on June 14, 2015 and harvested on October 6, 2015.
