Interpretive Summary

This study was continued in 2014 to validate the long-term effect of Nutrient Expert(R) (NE)-based fertilizer recommendations for winter wheat (the fifth crop) and summer maize (the sixth crop) in farmer fields and to compare them with current farmer fertilization practices (FP). For this study, 14 on-farm winter wheat and 11 summer maize experiments were conducted in Xinji and Zhengding Cities, Hebei.

Nutrient Expert-Based Fertilizer Recommendation for Summer Maize in Hebei, 2010 Imbalanced nutrient application and excessive use of N have presented a great challenge to North-central China in recent years. These practices have resulted in losses of yield and profits for farmers, and caused detrimental environmental effects.

Effect of Ecological Intensification on Maize Yield and Nutrient Uptake and Utilization A long-term field experiment was established in 2009 at Dahe Experimental Station near Shijiazhuang City, Hebei to investigate the ability of ecological intensification (EI) practices to improve yields and minimize adverse environmental impacts within a typical winter wheat-summer maize cropping system in Northcentral China.

Hebei is a grain production base for winter wheat and summer maize. Research activities in 2008 focused on optimizing nutrient management in these crops. Nutrient omission treatments were examined within a winter wheat-summer maize rotation system in a medium fertility soil in Xinji County. A separate trial also examined the extent to which N, P, and K rates could be adjusted on summer maize.

Hebei is a great production base for winter wheat, summer corn, cotton, and peanut. Research activities in 2007 continued monitoring balanced fertilization on these crops. A long-term, fixed-site study for K use in a winter wheat/summer corn rotation system had been carried out in Xinji since 1992.

The amount of K off-take by crops grown in Hebei Province is steadily increasing and crop responses to K application are common each year. This long-term study continues to examine the effect of K application and balanced fertilization (BF) on wheat and corn. The fixed-site study for K use in a winter wheat/summer corn rotation system indicated that K has become as significant in sustaining high summer corn yields as was previously found in winter wheat.
