Interpretive Summary

A 3-year experimental study on the effect of source, rate and time of K application on apple fruit yield and quality in Shaanxi indicated that application of KCl at 0. 15 to 0. 60 kg K2O/tree produced 15 to 32% more fruit and US$7,070 to 14,470/ha more return over the control without K fertilization. Application of 0. 30 to 0.

Field trials were conducted in Shaanxi, Shandong and Liaoning Provinces to investigate fertilizer use in apple orchards and to study the effect of source, rate and time of potash application on apple yield and quality. The orchard sites in Shandong and Liaoning had low soil organic matter content. The average mineral N, Olsen-P and exchangeable K concentrations in the surface soil (0 to 20 cm depth) were 78, 76 and 238 mg/kg in Shandong and 81, 87 and 103 mg/kg in Liaoning.

Investigations and field trials were conducted in apple orchards at selected sites in Shaanxi, Shandong, and Liaoning provinces to (1) demonstrate the current status of apple production and fertilizer use and (2) study the effects of source, rate, and time of potash application on fruit yield and quality. The K balance in apple orchards was also estimated.
