Interpretive Summary

Vegetables and banana are major crops in Fujian Province, and these crops need much more fertilizer than grain crops. Therefore, these two crops have a great impact on local fertilization efficiency, economics and the environment.

Vegetable planting area has increased to about 670,000 ha in Fujian Province, while Zhangzhou city, in the north of Fujian, is China's banana planting city with excellent banana quality and flavor. Therefore, vegetables and banana planting play an important role in agricultural production in Fujian province. However, farmers in Fujian overfertilize banana and vegetables year after year.

Vegetable planting area in Fujian Province has reached 670,000 ha with a total production of 14,530,100 t, and is valued at USD 33 billion. However, imbalanced fertilization practices usually followed by farmers here affect the environment negatively. This study was conducted by the Soil and Fertilization Institute of Fujian Academy of Agricultural Science with the objectives of demonstrating efficient fertilization technology for vegetables and banana in Fujian.
